Floating On
Mirror on Tapas! by iMilq

Hey everyone! After deliberation, we've decided to mirror Floating On onto Tapas!

If you haven't heard of it, Tapas is another comic hosting service. It already has a large community and is still growing.

What does this mean for us? And more importantly, what does it mean for you?

Tapas will allow us to more easily generate revenue. As of right now, our only revenue source is Patreon. Tapas allows creators to gain revenue from advertisements. These ads are generally small, unobtrusive, and are placed at the end of a comic page.

This news doesn't actually change anything for you guys here on Smackjeeves. We are not planning on moving exclusively to Tapas. We are simply copying our pages from this site over to Tapas.

What is happening with our Tapas mirror?

FO on Tapas does not currently have all pages available to read. The entirety of chapter 1 has been posted as of April 9. Each day following, we are updating at 3 pages a day until the Tapas mirror is all caught up with the version here on Smackjeeves. I would estimate that it will catch up sometime in late May or early June.

Why should you read the version on Tapas even though you can easily read it here?

1. Tapas has a mobile app that you may like better.
2. You will be supporting us. With enough subscribers on Tapas, we can start generating ad revenue.
3. While I was scheduling all the uploads, I added comments on many pages. There is some information about the FO universe and some behind the scenes things you may not have read before.

That's about it. Thanks for reading!
And thank you to our long-time readers and our Patrons! You guys are awesome!

Tapas is not actually growing though: if anything, it's slowly but consistently dying out in favor of WebToons

@Golb989: Thank you for your comment.

You may very well be correct about this. We actually did consider using Webtoons instead of Tapas, but decided against it.

I had two main reasons for this choice.
1. The revenue service for creators on Webtoons seems less friendly. It's easier to apply for the program on Tapas than the one on Webtoons.
2. I'm not completely sure about readers' expectations. As its name implies, Webtoons seems more suited for the webtoons format than the webcomics format. Floating On is made as a webcomic, in that its format is similar to print comics. Webtoons, on the other hand, are meant to be read on mobile devices. I don't know if potential readers will be put off due to FO not meeting their expectations.

Perhaps we could mirror FO to Webtoons in the future, but we've committed to the Tapas mirror for now.

Dunno, as far as i know it's the other way around, both for the revenue and the format.

That, and LOTS of succesful creators left Tapas for Webtoons (sometimes forgetting to even notify their readers...) and i also know many that got several thousands of readers on Webtoons in few weeks while only few hundreds or less on Tapas after several months.

Then again, i never liked Webtoons to begin with, mostly due to how poorly the community portion of the site is handled (even worse than Jeeves) and i stopped liking Tapas when the community there became too toxic for me, so i don't really care either way.

@Golb989: Thanks for the info! I guess I'll continue to look into Webtoons. I remember there was even a scandal on Tapas a while back that resulted in many creators moving. There's always a risk.

If things turn out poorly with Tapas, we can always make the switch.
(To be honest, it took me about 7 hours of work to resize all the pages and schedule the uploads. I kinda don't want to do it all again unless necessary.)

I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks again!

(Also, i was just gonna delete my comment and copy-paste it into an actual reply, but you were faster than me)

Does this have something to do with why the comic has apparently been deleted here? Or is that a problem on my end?
iMilq April 11th, 2019, 11:08 am
@Arcane Howitzer: The comic has not been deleted here. If you go to latest page, it may say, "The author of this Web Comic has not uploaded any comics yet."

I'm not exactly sure why this is happening, but if you click on archive, all our pages are still here. My only guess is that we queued up too many pages here and it's glitching out.

EDIT: It seems my guess was correct. I removed a few of the queued up pages here and it looks like it's fixed.
